Is there a different between PNP and NPN transistors? I am wondering if it would make a difference if you switched a PNP for a NPN in the circuit. All advice and insight welcome.

Is there a difference? Very much so! NPN's require a more positive voltage on the base (The P in NPN).as compared to the emitter.
The PNP requires a more negative voltage on the base as compared to the emitter.
