The simplest way to do sound output is just to connect a piezoelectric speaker to a Basic Stamp output pin. Parallax sells them here www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=900-00001 and you may find an equivalent at Radio Shack.

According to the schematic in the What's a Microcontroller Manual (pg. 220), you don't need a resistor.

If you do get a piezo at radio shack, remember they may have different kinds. Some have a circuit built in that runs from a 12V supply or other voltages. Some are just a piezo element that you run a square wave into to make various frequencies. Some use magnetic drive circuits.

The 273-074 12VDC Piezo Mini Buzzer runs from 3.0V to 16V and only takes 7mA at 12V I just measured it at 5V and its only 2mA

You can't control the frequency though on that type.

Think Inside the box first and if that doesn't work..
Re-arrange what's inside the box then...
    Think outside the BOX!

You can make tones of different pitch·with the piezospeaker that Parallax carries.

Chapter 8 of "What's a Microcontroller?" shows you the circuit, and has many programming examples for using the FREQOUT command to make simple sound effects and for writing and playing songs.

You can download it here: http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=28123
