quick question on "collet' sockets...

hello.
.·· Parallax didn't have 28-pin sockets for their own SX-28's two years ago --- I figure that I wouldn't always be able to bring my computer to a project to do an upgrade, so I'd socket the SX-28 to make it portable /·replaceable.

.·· I bought some wide "normal-pin" sockets from DigiKey by mistake - and then bought sockets of the·correct width right after that - but they·had "hard-looking" round holes, (collets ?) and I never used them because I·felt that·a removed-chip would no longer be useable.·· I ended up cutting the too-wide sockets down the middle and soldering each 14-pin·row to my boards separately.

.·· Now I have found 28-pin "narrow" sockets with the "normal", flat pins at http://www.futurlec.com/SockIC.shtml·· but still wonder what the "collet" sockets were for...
.·· Would IC's be replacable in those "hard-looking", round holes ? ? ?··· I think I'm just going to throw them away.

    The "collet" sockets are called "machined pin" sockets and are just a higher-quality (and more expensive) version of the "normal-pin" sockets (i.e. "double-beam" sockets, which contact both sides of the pin, or "single beam" sockets, which contact only one side) . They usually have trifurcated, spring-loaded contacts which grip the pin much more strongly than the "normal" kind, so they are usually preferred where vibration might be an issue. It's completely safe to install your SX28s in them. And, personally, I wouldn't use any other kind of DIP socket. But, yes, it's a little harder to extract the DIP from one of these, so you might consider a "normal" socket if it's something you'll be doing repeatedly.
