Help, I don't have serial port in my laptop
Hello everyone
I bought a BASIC Stamp (HomeWork Bord). It works with(PBASIC Language 2.5, Stamp Model BS2) when I write a code.
It worked perfectly in a normal PC.
My laptop doesn't have any serial ports, so I bought a serial-to-USB port wire.
I went to the page:
http://www.parallax.com/html_pages/downloads/software/ftdi_drivers.asp
After finishing the three steps, the stamp editor didn't Identify the stamp.
I saw the TROUBLESHOOTING USB DRIVER PROBLEMS from:
http://www.parallax.com/dl/docs/prod/ftdi/USBDriverTroubleshooting-V1.0.pdf
in "Reducing the Latency Timer Setting" it says that I should go to control pannel -> System -> Hardware tab·-> Device Manager
in the hardware categories I should see a Ports Catigory, the problem is there is no such catigory in the laptop! and at the same time, I checked in a normal PC and I sow it there.
what should I do??
I use Windows XP sp2
thanks

There are many brands, and many of them don't work with the BS2, since the vendors of the adapters chose NOT to implement some of the handshake signals.
The Driver you downloaded assumes you have an FTDI adapter -- it won't work with just any adapter.

The one Parallax offers works perfectly and is certainly competitively priced. I paid nearly $30 for the Belkin. The Parallax USB/Serial adapter is half that price and works with my other devices also. Right now, for $3 more Parallax will throw in a cable. www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=28031
I say with all due respect, I wouldn’t mind seeing the adapter packaged in a plastic protective case, as it is a bit delicate when hanging-out cantilevered off the BOA like it does.
BTW: Steven, I have a brand-new HP Pavilion and they have every type of media connector you can think of EXCEPT a for serial port! Go figure.
Good Luck!

I have an HP pavilion dv 1000
Yes, this laptop does not have a parallel port or a serial port
you can see all the ports in its pictures, if you are interested, but try not to buy such one because it has some problems

I will order the adapter as soon as possible
but another question: when I order this adapter, will it work in my laptop also??
I buy hundreds of TABLET pcs. None of them have parallel or serial ports. All of them have USB ports. I don't know if the same is now true of laptops, because I no longer buy them.
The USB port is the obvious replacement for both parallel and serial ports. For now.
