Transformer question

I have a transformer here that I pulled from something, and It has a strange terminal setup. On the 'side' is a plastic screw terminal, with only two wires leading to it, one from the top of the transformer and one from the bottom, both on the same side. There is another screw terminal on the bottom, attached to the transformer case. This has a ground symbol on it.
Does anyone who has experience with these things know how this should be wired?

    It could be many things. Usually, if there's a ground symbol, that terminal has something to do with a ground connection. It may be attached to the case itself for shielding and may not be connected to the windings at all. It may be connected to a center tap. You'll have to test it with an ohmmeter or continuity checker. It's likely that the two screw terminals are connected to opposite ends of one winding. Again, you'll have to check it out with an ohmmeter. There's no mention of a second winding. This may not be a transformer at all, but a choke which would have only one winding. Even if it is a transformer, you have no way of knowing what it's designed for. If it is a power transformer, you don't know the current capacity of the windings or the turns ratio or the insulating capacity. It might be a high voltage output transformer that could be very dangerous if connected to AC power. Unless you know what you're doing and have the proper equipment to investigate this, I'd leave it alone.

    I think you may be right in saying that this is a choke. There doesn't even appear to be a second winding, and the two screw terminals are connected electrically. I have just never seen a choke in this package before.

    It may be an 'audio' choke that is intended to be inserted into a speaker cabinet. That would explain the screws. Most high voltage setups would have soldered lugs for safety reasons - better connection.
