For weeks now I have been logged in and sudden get dropped from the server.
When I try to relog, it often takes 5 or more tries before it takes.

This is FYI.· I am not angry, ·just a bit weary of writing a response and loosing it before it is posted.

Kramer,

I'm not sure what you mean by 'getting dropped from the server'. Are you seeing a situation where the site suddenly thinks you are not logged in? When you attempt to login, what do you see after you click the 'Submit' button?

Firstly, I have Microsoft XP, MS Office 2003, and Norton Security - all with automatic updates.
They may be the culprits as I cannot fully understand whatever they might change on the fly.

Recently, I completely reloaded Windows XP, Microsoft Office 2003, and Norton Security as I was having a huge slowdown. My Norton Security was updated in March along with another product, System Mechanic. At that time, I discovered that Norton and Iolo's System Mechanic no longer will operate together [a commercial turf war]. I removed the System Mechanic, but was getting a lot of unresponsive applications in Windows.

So, you may rightly conclude that this is not a Parallax originating problem.

At times, I have been posting a message and get a 'logged off' either before or at the time I attempt to submit.

When I attempt to immediately log on, the site will not recognize me for several attempts. It is as if I have been shut off and a time out element is disallowing a valid re-entry.

In some cases, I felt that my response was trivial. So it didn't matter.
In any event, since my 'major reload', I still have experienced being bumped off.
After my submit, I get a screen that says I have not logged in.

Hi George..
I really think that the issues you are having relate to Norton Security...
I would have kept System Mechanic, and dropped all of the Norton prgs.
Norton is notorious for hogging system resources.
Norton adds so many entries to the registry, that even they do NOT remove all of em on an uninstall, and with so many entries it slows down the bootup of any system.
Norton AV does NOT do a good job of detecting all viri, worm, trojan, a fact well known...
When I do an install on a clients machine, I use;
AVG free, upgradeable to Pro for anti virus protection.
Ewido, or NOD for worm/trojan although NOD is also great for viri as well.
SpyBot S&D for worm/trojan
AdAware SE for worm/trojan
ZoneAlarm for firewall upgradeable to Pro, and you can get AV included...

And I use Registry Mechanic / Spyware Doctor from www.pctools.com/en/

For cleaning up clients infected machines....

Good Luck! smilewinkgrin.gif

This site relies on cookies to manager your login status. It sure seems like something on your system is interfering with those cookies.

I recently sat through a 2+ hour debug session over the phone with a relative who was experiencing bizzare browser issues. It seems that, if McAfee is good at protecting a system, then installing Norton SystemWorks on top of it can only make it better - right? The result was that the browser would launch, but was unable to contact any web site. Removing both utilities did nothing to correct the problem. We had to eventually revert back to the original - pre utility installations - before the browser would start working again.

I know that Norton and Zone Alarm both insert themselves into the HTTP stream to examine the traffic to and from the browser. They insert JavaScript into the received HTTP stream, which the browser dutifully executes when the browser renders the page. Some of the scripts break the JavaScript that was sent from the server - but the server (and the developer) have no idea that this is happening. In most cases, neither does the end user. All they see is that the site is no longer working correctly.

Heh, if you are using McAfee suite, take a look at this news.com.com/Flaw+found+in+McAfee+suite/2100-1002_3-5676436.html ...
And this...www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1997344,00.asp?kc=EWEWEMNL073106EPW4
It seems that they have a BIG problem blush.gif
Also I have found that McAfee and Norton are starting to share the same problem, that is that they are resource hogs, and do not do as good a job protecting your system as they used to..
As far as firewalls go, I personally use Black Ice from ISS... But I also use ZoneAlarm pro on my work/developement systems.....
Could you point me to more info on ZA and injecting javascript, I was wondering what would happen if js was disabled in the browser???

Thanks!!!

Bob,

We stopped using ZA about a year ago because of the JavaScript injection. The details are a little hazy now, but what I do remember is that we had to place selected web sites in an 'allowed' list with ZA in order to stop the injections. I do remember spending several hours trying to track down the correct configuration on the ZA support site and ended up finding a key piece of information in a forum. I was able to verify the injections by comparing the page source on a machine with ZA installed with one on a system where ZA was not installed. Having multiple systems on my desk is handy sometimes. One more question,
If I dump Norton Security and keep Norton Ghost V 9.0, am I still going to suffer difficulties.
I have an older version of Ghost on CD, but it doesn't support the new harddisk file system and I have avoid MS Backup because I never seem to have a complete boot image [which is the most important information is a virus attack]

The Norton Ghost utility does not affect security or browser settings like the Security suite does. It is concerned with creating image files from the contents of a disk. It won't create the kinds of issues you are seeing with your browser.

I couldn't get rid of Norton Internet Security.

We really suffer when software sompanies fight for turf.·

Real Player versus Media Player has been resolved, but for years it took all the pleasure out of listening to music or radio on the internet.·You had to have an Apple to use Real Player well and had to have·Microsoft to use MediaPlayer.· It seemed like you couldn't have both on the same computer.

There are lots of these stories and all I can say is that I prefer to either do without the feature offered or secondly, I go with the company that cares more about its customers.· Sadly there have been times that even though their software has been on the wrong side of it all, ·I have had to stay with Microsoft just because it is my operating system.· But I still prefer to support the guys [like Parallax] that try to support their customer's needs.

For anyone that wants to know, it appears that Norton Internet Security doesn't play nice with other related products.·It seems that they want you to buy their full line [must have SytemWorks] at premium prices. ·I tried·to remove·Norton Internet Security·completely in order to installl System Mechanci and found that one folder in the program folder would not go away.· Thusly, System Mechanic [which has adapted to living along side of Norton Security with using its Firewall and its Anti-virus], can be ONLY·installed without·System Mechanic's·firewal and anti-virus.· But I must stay with the Norton Internet Security until they will tell me how to completely remove their software.· They seem very evasive about this and claim the whole automated removal process is complete. [I reinstalled my WindowsXP and was still stuck with their software.· This took hours.]

As I see it, System Mecnanic introduced there own firewall and anti-virus.· So they tried to shut out Norton and Norton responded by making their software impossible to completely remove.· Thus, together these guys have made a mess of my computer's operation since March.

Norton seems to want you to buy more software to fix the situation.· System Mechanic at least seems to have backed off and decided to operate along side Norton.

At times, the system support vendors are as back as the viruses, the spyware, and the hackers.·

Try " Norton Killer.exe " at this site, it should clean all refrences of Symantec/Norton from your registry....

tools.house-tech.net/

Then I would install Unlocker, it allows a forced delete/copy of files/folders..

There are a lot of nice utils on that site as well...
