Are there any plans to upgrade an SX with more internal RAM?· I would like to see an SX with several K of RAM. I'm sure lots of others would welcome an expanded amount of memory.
The SX is a mature and static architecture. This means there will likely be no changes to the SX in the future (other than the possibility of new packaging), Parallax's current focus of development is the Propeller.
Does this mean the SX is on it's last legs. And is coming close to being terminated? It seems that once develoupment stops on an item, these items tend to dissapear. Especially considering recently the SX52 has been discontinued.
No, its not on its last legs, the design has been static for many years, but Parallax has aquired the chip from Ubicom in order to continue its manufacture. Parallax has a vested interest in the continued production of the SX since many of thier BS2's rely upon the chip. The issue with the SX52 had nothing to do with obselecence, but with Parallax being unable to find an economically viable means to continue it's production due to the die's size not fitting in the package without first machining the inside of the package. The die used in the SX48 is the same as the SX52, only not all of the I/O pads of the die are bonded to an external pin. There is the possibility of the SX52 returning at some point (likely in a 64 pin package which can fit the large die), but it is not something being actively pursued (read as: "If you are a company with a large order (and large enough bankroll), accomodations could probably be made if you really need a 40 I/O version")
