serial port or I/O pin ?

Would I require to interface this to the serial port or could I just tie RTS & CTS high and connect the data lead to a I/O pin ?

    Electrically, this looks like you could tie it to an I/O pin. It's a 5V true high serial bit stream. It's not clear from this single page of documentation how the data is controlled (clocked). It's a 17 bit serial data stream, but at what rate? There are two control signals for Request and Ready. If Request is a bit clock, then you could use SHIFTIN to get the data, but it's not clear from the data sheet.

    It looks like that device is electrically-compatible with the Stamp's I/O pins -- but that document is lacking connection/interfacing details.
