Is it possible
·
get an active low or high signal from one of the pin on the micro controller to activate a basic 12 volt relay? or would i have to use a bjt as a switch to activate the relay?

You need a bjt. I/O pins can max. sink/source 25mA.

Take a look at the DC-16. Simple serial control of up to 16 (on one DC-16) outputs (via darlington).
