Since Europe is changing over to LEAD-FREE ICs all products are being produced in two versions. This pretty much has everyone doubling their inventory while not being sure where the sales are going.
So Parallax is doing the same as everyone else. Trying to keep inventory down until there are clear indication of what the customers want. The SX-28 dropped siginifcantly in price and can accept all the code written for the SX-18. You just have pins left over, unused.

At the moment the SX18AC/DP is discontinued, but it could be continued in the future since it is the same die as the SX20AC/SS. Parallax is the only source for these chips and we can package them as dictated by customer demand. For now, I'd suggest you use the SX28.
