I just got the Parallax 2x16 LCD Display and have been toying around with it on my Stamp Board. And I got wandering, is there a way to plug the lcd directly into the computer via serial without using it in conjunction with the stamp?

Thanks
Matt

Yes, you need what is called a "serial backpack" and with it you can send it ASCII codes.

If you've got our 2x16 serial LCD, then yes, but you'll need an inverter -- like a USB2SER (I've tried this so I know it does work) or MAX232. If you have USB2SER, connect the USB2SER.TX line to the LCD.RX pin, and make sure that the USB2SER.VSS pin is connected to the LCD.GND pin. Of course, you'll need to get +5 vdc somewhere.

I don't have one so I can't guarantee it, but it looks like it might work. You just need to know which pin from the device connects to TX on the PC, that's what you'll connect to the LCD.RX pin.

No, you'll have to contact the vendor of the device you have and ask them about its output -- what you're wanting it TTL level serial, true mode (that means the line idle state is high).
