Anyone using the PLM-24 with S.N.A.P.

I got into studying about error correction of serial data transmission as I have been considering getting some long distance control.

First it was Parity check, then CRC, and then CANbus [which has both].· In fact I was almost totally sold in CANbus until I came across the PLM-24 [which is a Power Line Modem and the related software].· It seems more flexible and less proprietary.
·
You can look at http://www.hth.com/snap/

The mfg. claims it will do·the same as an X-10 device, but is far more flexible and faster.·
Unlike CANbus, you don't have to provide wire as it uses the house wiring.·

Also, it has multilayer error check and correction.· And, you can tie it into your computer network with the provided software.

    Kramer,

Christer's concept is an excellent one and it initially had some good support when it was announced. Today that product has disappeared due to support from HTH. I wouldn't expect to see it become available again.

It seems like I am going in circles [again]. There seems to be so much electronics history to catch up on.

Intially, I liked the idea of the power line modem with 'improved' funtionality over the X-10. But, I see that sometimes the power line modem is blocked by a device [like a T.V., CD player, or Computer] that has EMI filtering on the AC. They suggest using a different outlet, but that is not always possible.

Since EMI filtering is becoming a reality in almost everything, I might as well go back to looking at CANbus.

While CANbus has only 8 byte packets [compared to 512byte packets] it is totally independent of the complexities of using the AC line [additional noise from refrigerators causing slowdowns and tranmission being blocked by transmission line transformers]. And since the CANbus wire is low voltage and fire safe, it seems easier to run the wire for a HA [home automation system].

    George,

some time ago i ran across a system the israel's(sp?) cam up with for automotive that put the data on the same line with the automotive dc power. Google for it.

    Thanks Spence,
The Yamar system seems interesting, but I have to learn how to use the CANbus first.

While Yamar depends on a CANbus controller, S.N.A.P provides an alternative software package the network. And then there is the DC power environment which is redundant in a home automation system.

    KRAMER,

FROM MY READING, CAN BUS IS NOT THE ONLY WAY.

SEEMS IN THIS LISTIING UART IS USED ALSO AND LIN BUSS.
