Electronics Shopping in NYC
This is a follow-up on a post of mine from about a month ago. I asked advice about shopping for electronic components/kits while on a visit from the UK to New York. Many of you were kind enough to give me advice and, having just returned, I thought that a report on how I got on would be useful to others.
The advice was basically threefold:
1. Purchase from RadioShack stores, which stock the BOE-BOT and WAM kit.
2. Order from Parallax and have the order shipped to the hotel; this would avoid the high shipping cost to the UK
3. Visit surplus stores in Canal Street, Manhattan
The first was successful and I purchased two BOE-Bots and some components·from RadioShack. The second idea worked perfectly and the package was delivered to my hotel on a 3 day UPS shipping. Unfortunately, the electronics surplus stores in Canal Street have gone; some shop names remain but they now sell cheap souvenirs and fake designer·handbags etc, with the few remaining electronics stores selling massive disco sound equipment, car stereos and cheap imported consumers electronics (MP3 players etc.)
My thanks to all of you who helped. BTW this was my first visit to New York and was very busy, enjoyable and rewarding.
Regards,
John
