"Javelin not found on serial port"

Ok, to cut to the chase, I'm using a brand new javelin stamp and super carrier, with a usb-serial adaptor. I'm pretty sure I have the right COM port and that the adapter works, because it gives me a different error message if I specify another COM port. All I have done is opened the javelin stamp package, put it onto the IC socket (yes, its the right way), plugged in a new 9V battery (led lights up, stamp warms up), hooked up the cable, written and successfully compiled "helloworld," and clicked "debug," only to get the "not found" message. I've done almost everything the manual suggests, except trying it on a different computer. Is there anything I've missed or done wrong so far? ALso, how do I know if I have a "null modem adaptor? All mine says is "USB to RS232 cable," so could this be what's wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Edit: I've tested my stamp with another computer with a serial port, and it worked great. I've also tried reintalling/downloading more recent drivers for my cable, but none seem to work sad.gif . Looks like I need a new cable.

what usb-serial adaptor are you using? Is it the one from parallax (FTDI) or some other brand?

It's some OEM adaptor, not the one from parallax. I think this may be the problem, so I'm going to see if I can run it on a computer with a serial port tomorrow. If it works then its probably my adaptor, but If it still won't recognize the javelin, what else can I do?

Try to update the driver for the adapter (this helped me).

    (edit)
(other things to try, Copied from other treads)

to use a wall-mount power supply

you may need to set the "Latency timer" to one. Go to your "Device manager" and click on ports, then click on the "Port settings" tab and then click on "Advance" and you see the "Latency" timer setting, change it to one.

And, if by change your adapter has a listing for a FIFO buffer (Unlikely) disable it.

You will probably have to restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

    FWIW,

I gave up on my USB to parallel port a long time ago....

I tried everything recommended for this problem and could not get it to work under any circumstances.

Do you mean USB to serial? Anyhow, how did you get your javelin connected to your PC? Does anyone know of a brand of adaptor that does actually work? If it's a large brand name, I could probably shop around for it and buy it locally, which would be quicker.
