Hello and first question. Anshan Yes YM162-04 LCD

Greetings everyone,

After deciding to dive in to the world of Basic Stamp, projects that
were in my mind and seem impossible suddenly became a
possibility... :) Being a mechanical engineer, I always felt the
lack of, I would say finish, on my projects since things dont move
with out a brain. Stamp is a nice way to get things going since I do
not need to learn complicated computer languages.

Anyways let me get to the question without boring you to death. I am
working on a project where I want to information recieved to be
dumped to the LCD, well first I need to get it hooked up ;)

I bought an Anshan Yes Lcd 2x16 1/16 duty 1/5 bias (what that means I
have no clue) I found their web site (web ferret finds everything)
and I still can not figure out what this thing is. they have given
the outputs and I am just speculating which ones are whick since they
are not labeled.

And can someone tell me how I can understand if this thing has a
driver on it or not.

I know, I know, I should just go and get the lcd that works :)

Pleasure to be apart of the stamp world ;)

Cheers everyone.

Assuming this is an HD44780 based display, there are examples on how to make
it work on Parallax's site, and I also have a few examples at
http://www.lennard.net.nz/ (click on circuit ideas, then under displays
click on "How to drive an Hitachi HD44780 based LCD display").

cheers,

Ben, Wellington. New Zealand.

That actually is my main problem. How do I know it is HD44780 based
or not? I have visited the site earlier and it is a jewel of
information :) I did how ever figured out the pin outs of the lcd (I
hope) I ll probably give it a joy ride see if it blows up :p

Cheers

Does it have a 14 pin connector?

If so, it is likely it is a HD44780 based LCD display, and will therefore
follow the standard pinouts as mentioned in the url theat - opps soory -er
sorry - I mean that the url that my web page points to mentions (a little
too much Export Gold tonight... effecting typing... *HIC!*).

OK,

Sounds li9ke it is a HD44780 based display. BTW: 9 = error - opps...

I'd check out the following url before you apply any power:

http://home.iae.nl/users/pouweha/lcd/lcd0.shtml

It was the first url I visited in order to get me going with my 2 x 20
display...

Proved very useful (which is why I've linke dit in my web page...)

*HIC!*

Ben, Werrington, New Sheeeeeealand.

BTW: Turkish cofferre ish darn good stuff man!

Serdar,

I have some LCD displays with 16 pins as well, and
they too use 15 and 16 for LED Backlight. Mine are
labeled Datavision DV-16252-11 S2FBLY and they also
have P191-2 on the back. Anyway, they too follow the
standard Hitachi controller outputs:

1 - Vss (GND)
2 - Vcc (+5VDC)
3 - Vee (LCD Contrast/can connect to GND)
4 - RS (Register Select)
5 - R/W (Read/Write)
6 - E (Enable/Active High)
7 - DB0
8 - DB1
9 - DB2
10- DB3
11- DB4
12- DB5
13- DB6
14- DB7
15- BL+
16- BL-

On mine, connecting the BL- pin to ground and the BL+
to Vcc through a 10 ohm resistor satisfies the
Backlight's needs. I usually connect this through a
transistor and then I can control the Backlight with
an I/O pin through a 1K resistor into the NPN
Transitor. Hope this info helps.

Chris,

Thanks for the info, last night I managed to get it to work. Yes
just like you said it is compatible with the hitachi. I used the
code and schematics that were in the lcd character creator by
parallax.

I havent been successful yet with the control of the backlight yet.
At the moment I just yank the plug out LOL. But thank you,and
everyone else who helped very much

Serdar

No problem! =)

Okay, well let me see if I can help you real quick...
Pin 15 (BL+) connects to a 10 ohm resistor, the other
end to the +5VDC line. Pin 16 (BL-) connects to a 10
ohm resistor, the other end goes to the collector of a
2N2222 or similiar NPN transitor, the emitter of the
transistor goes to ground. The base of the transistor
goes through a 1K resistor to a pin on the stamp.
When that pin is high the LCD backlight is on. When
the pin is low it's off. I don't do real good ascii
schematics, but if you want I will try.
