Help with Building a Tracking Device

  I have been thinking about a similar project.
  on my wish list is a cat door.
  of course the cat collar would
  signal the proximity of the cat.
  
  tracking is the next logical step.
  
  Having one for the kids would be neat too.
  
  I was thinking of a rf pulse out to the remote
  then when the remote gets the pulse, it would
  respond with ID ie: senor #1 would be different
  than #2.
  
  That would serve for distance. remember, I'm thinking
  a cat or kid so 'close' would be withing 6-10 feet.
  
  as for direction, I think that would have to be a
  dual anetnna, one omni to get the communication
  links going, and a seperate directional one.
  
  My added feature is a continuous posting so as
  to tell when a kid is too far away.
  
  A whole different method would be by using a GPS.
  those can give exact posistion, X Y Z for the
  spot on the planet. all you need to two units
  and determine the degrees of seperation.

  I actually sell tracking devices that use the internet as an
  interface. What will be your exact application?
