Memory Stick Datalogger (#27937) questions

Hello!
I have one of these Memory Stick Datalogger (#27937), it was sent to me along with a lot of other items by one of the other members. Please do not ask me who.

But the question is one of this, "Can this device and its FTDI developed hosting chip, be used away from a Parallax BASIC Stamp or related device?" The upshot is that I am working on one of my many ideas, the kind that can be considered a deep blue sky, freezing air and and very deep snow on the ground, complete with mountains all over the place, and the person studying things is in the middle. And the problem has a solution hiding behind one of them.

Yes I know that's a very strange thing to include in a forum posting, but, ah that's how I think.

  • Hello!
Let me rephrase and restate that idea.
Normally I would setup a BS2 setup on the BOE platform to use an ordinary LCD display such as either of the two available from Parallax to display what data I am sending to it from an external system. That system could be one of many Netduino boards setup to manage digital logic arrangements.

But in this case the data is coming from an Adafruit Feather, an "Adafruit Feather 32u4 Basic Proto" in fact, setup to present on its serial port, the internal temperature of the chip, and the voltage of the LiPoly running it. Normally it gets sent to a regular terminal program on the host. I'd rather have it logged to a regular "thumb drive" or "flash drive" or "memory stick" as they are all called. When FTDICHIP announced the chip behind this function, their VDrive1 and VDrive2 modules for example, (those are completed ones that contain everything in one plastic body.), and the component chipsets before them, I decided that it it would work. Of course they were announced well before Adafruit released the Feather device, but the logging functions were also aimed to my earlier examples. And of course I'd never had a chance to actually buy from Parallax the original device described here, who does all of that. Incidentally consider that one of the options as the solution is being looked for.

  • Sorry gang the project has been canceled. It's too complex even by my standards.

  • Hi,
One way to reduce complexity might be to use a Microcontroller board which has a sd card slot and comes with a library to access it. For example there are such for esp32, which can be programmed with arduino. Also Parallax P2 can access sd cards.....
    Just an idea...

Thank you! I also looked at a logging device, created by Sparkfun, their "SparkFun OpenLog", but I never really got back a response on the idea behind how to program it when the release numbers have gotten bumped up appropriately. (I just checked.) Okay Christof you win the prize for responding, but you're going to need to find how to get to Tatooine for a whirlwind tour of its settlements and even farms.

    Mascots sleeping.
