who doesn't love the expressiveness of a nice emoticon??
Intrusive? Sure! (why can't it be in the menu bar with all the other fun little icons?)
Useless? Borders on being off-topic?
PITA? Well, who doesn't like a nicely warmed PITA with their shawarma?
My biggest problem with it is that it doesn't always put the :magic-word: where the cursor is, sometimes it just dumps it down at the bottom of the message. So you end up having to move it where you want it taking the spontaneity out of the smiley process.
Is it just you....well, no, let's not make this all about you!
It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't intrude on the text entry area. Maybe if it could just be moved out of the text box onto the toolbar with the rest of the widgets ...
I don't even want to block most of the few adds I see around the net. But a general purpose HTML/CSS processor that could de-uglify and castrate most web sites would be great.
I think it's just a matter of moving it up to the toolbar with the rest of the tools. It is handy, after all, if you forget what the ASCII equivalent of your favorite emoticon is.
Problem is, I think, that the smiley thing is not really any part of the code of the post edit box. Rather it is some kind of gross hack applied to the text box element using emotify.js as xanadu points out above.

It definitely gets in the way much too often. Trying to figure out if a word is spelled right or if there's a missing space, or want to move the cursor for editing - but the icon is in the way. It even interfered with my writing in this very post. On Android, but it's troublesome on the desktop too.

Nearly as much as the fake happy greetings you get if you happen to walk into a McDonalds by accident.
Open ABP, click open blockable items, block this -
http://forums.parallax.com/plugins/ParallaxEmotify/js/emotify.js?v=2.0.5
Reload, gone. It might break other functionality, not sure.

Oh well. I don't like it, but I can live with it.
Uh-huh.
