What's that smell?
I got home early from work today and had a few moments to work on my new robot. Progress required taking it apart to swap out some parts. While I was putting it back together I start smelling something odd. I go over to the furnace and the smell gets weaker. It's also not by the work bench. Hmm, I go back to the robot and it smells like burning plastic.
I quickly pull the batteries out and they are hot. The battery holder is hot and a bit melted. It turns out that the leads shorted out while I was putting it together which was the source of the problem. After things cooled I put in new batteries in and the robot appears no worse for the wear, but that's the first time that happened.

That makes you a noob. An experienced robot builder like me has experienced that joy many times.
But then again, they say that those who never fried have never tried...........
Disclaimer:

Smoke emitting diode...
