Cylindrical Flat Top LEDs
I searched for low brightness, wide angle LEDs to use for power indicators. I did not need blinding light - just an obvious indicator.
Digikey has some inexpensive cylindrical, flat top LEDs by KingBright in 3mm and 5mm in red, green and yellow.
The specs say the visibility is 100 degrees. They are all around 3 to 5 mcd.
They are all rated for 10mA and you can get them for around 14 cents apiece in quantities of 10.
The part numbers are 754-130x-ND.

I have been using Superbrightleds, specifically this one, but your price looks much better.
I have also used these versions with with good results, but again more expensive.

Jim, the LEDS you are using are also much, much brighter - 1600 mcd vs 5 mcd.
I was really looking for a glow and not runway landing lights
Your RL5-G16120 5mm led does have a nice viewing angle - 120 degrees.
Those almost look like LED Christmas tree lights which tend to have surround glow, with the top-down view of a lit edge-circle.

Here is a little video showing the LEDs at various angles. The camcorder's color isn't quite accurate so the yellow looks more like orange...
