Found these circuit boards at ASAS for 1.99 each
Each board has a large back lit LCD on it. They are the standard 16 pin configuration.
If you dont have enough pins you can get a serial backpack for them.

I just bought 3 adapters, haven't used them yet. IIRC, it's Peter Anderson. He's the modern-day Forest Mims with his hand-drawn schematics: http://www.phanderson.com/lcd106/lcd117.pdf
Oops. Right you are Erco. I must have had a brain cramp and munged him with Paul Badger of Modern Device who sells a pcb for Peter's kit.
In any event, that kit is used in my CBA robot videos and works well with a BS2 robot to conserve pins.
Now I'll have to update my profile to be the "plywood, relays & LCD" retro- robot guy.
I tried them and DID go back to LCD. The OLED suffered horrible image burn-in. Maybe that's been fixed by now, but watch out.
