Workstation locations?

Hey there,

Gonna move to new home later this year. I've been thinking - where should I place my ultimate microcontroller workstation, on the spare room downstairs, or on my bedroom?

And also, do you do all the electronics stuff on the bedroom desk? Or you prefer to have it somewhere in the garage?

Too bad I do not have a garage at my new home, I'm in SE Asia and homes there are not equipped with such amenities. :)

Spare room downstairs, without a doubt.

Here's my thinking behind that choice. First, it doesn't sacrifice your key electronics interests by crowding them with other furniture. Second, since you are in SE Asia it is really easy to unroll an extra bed mat for guests in the spare room should you need to host anybody. You didn't say where you are, but I know that many Chinese people can sleep anywhere, nearly anytime. While Americans need a huge bed and lots of space, Chinese seem to get by with a thin, firm pad about 2/3rds the size equally well.

Whatever space you choose will never be large enough, so consider building your electronics room into a space that you can grow into.

    2 votes for 'spare room'.

    1) If you have a significant other, a 2AM session with your electronics in the bedroom may not be appreciated.
    2) Sometimes when working on something, it's good to be able to get away from it - it's hard to get away from your bedroom for more than 16-20 hours before you need it.
    3) clutter, clutter, clutter.........
    4) you may need to leave something running overnight - could be distracting to your sleep

@Ken, by your description of the Chinese, you make Matt sound to be Chinese (no offense to the Chinese)

I do my electronics on my desk (shared with PC's and other personal desk type stuff) or the dining room table - neither is a good situation. My next "spare time" project is a worktable for electronic things. Did I mention clutter, clutter, clutter??

@Ken Gracey: I'm in Malaysia, Singapore's next door neighbour.

The guest room will be either a normal bed (a cheap bed purchased from some furniture store), and also in my bedroom. I'm a Chinese descent, so yeah, I often sleep in bed mats.

I may try to put in a decent workstation in the spare room if it doesn't turn into some storeroom or anything else. Right now this is still a discussion with my parents so plans may change.

@mindrobots: I do not have an significant other yet. As I'm a postgraduate student, a research assistant, old and lonely (like Dr.Zoidberg), it's hard to have that in my mind. So I can still work on my usual stuff. :)

I would be putting this in the spare room as all recommended. :)
