  I think they just use that same board for a variety of sensors that need a comparator to get a strong logic drive out of them. Soldering a reed switch to it is cheap I guess.

  Be careful not to reverse the polarity of the Reed relay, it could have devastating effects. Fortunately the board is marked with +/- signs.
