Which A/D Converter to use?

Hello all:
·· I have a project coming up that will require an A/D converter. The project will be monitoring small currents or voltages. Once I have dealt with the voltage readings I will obviously convert to digital.

··· What is a cheap, reliable and easy to incorporate into parallax structure A/D converter. Another question, is it converter or convertor?tongue.gif

How small voltages are you talking about? I just got a ADC0831 and it works nicely. Its converter :

I strongly suggest the TLC2543.· This is an 11-channel 12-bit converter that is very easy to interface to any of the Basic Stamps.· 12-bit means the ADC has 4095 counts, each count being worth 1.22 millivolts.· So that would be the limit of your resolution.

Do you have a Stamp Tester?

I guess it depends on how much resolution you need.· For a "decent" resolution, I would also recommend the ADC0831.· It is an 8 bit serial·converter which is easily adjustable in span and range.· And they only use 3 pins from the BS2.

Thanks for the response so far gentlemen. I will be measuring a range between 30mV and 1 volt. I have an option to go as high as 2.5 volts with a specific sensor. I will decide which to use after some experimentation. I dont believe resolution is much of an issue as I am not recording small variations. Thanks so much for the help.

The 11 channel ADC recommended above is kinda pricey.· Unless you're going to be measuring lots of inputs, I'd go with the 2-channel ADC on parallax's IC accessory page.· I got 2 of those and they work nicely.· 12-bit resolution too.
