555 Tutorials

I frequently see requests for 555 applications and use; through other forums I've come across a couple of good resources for those that want to explore:

Keep in mind that the 555 is not really suited for high-accurate timing applications, but it is a very versatile little dude nonetheless.

WOW. I actually STILL have a 555 "cookbook" from way back when Radio shack sold electronic kits!!!

I DO use it every now and then. It's worn but is a great quick reference for projects.
Don't think I'd need a 555 now that I've finally got a MicroController that can do all of that and then some.

As far as I know, Radio Shack still sells the IC Timer Mini-Notebook, which mostly covers the 555...

    I still see 555 / 556 's in the new hardware I work with. Also '123 ( one-shot timers ). These things aren't dead yet.

    I just used one today!

Nothing like making a simple pulse generator when you need it.
I'm building fuel injection for my ATV with a PBASIC2 chip. Actually using the sx right now but got two PBASIC 2 chips on the way and hope they will be ok since i got them cheaper.

Anyway. To watch my circuit work I used the pulses from the 555 to the input and used the Micro Controller to send out a fixed pulse width to my injector. Once I got that working I removed the 555 circuit and·hooked it up to my ATV.
I've got a hall effect sensor type cam position sensor intalled in the timing chain cover over my cam sprocket. I made a simple target wheel.
So i got the thing hooked up with jumper wires and ran the quad off of the carb like normal. Used the cam signals to operate the Controller and fire my injector which just sprayed the fuel into the air!
I used fixed pulse width for now but will develope some variables later and inertface with a O2 sensor and maybe a throttle position sensor.

I just got the Micro Controller a few days ago but I am learning it's uses fast.

Hope to have a circuit board etched soon to intergrate all of my components onto one board and see if i can make this thing run smile.gif
