Hacking Microwaves

Hey Group,

I noticed that on Bob Blick's web site, he had the plans for
hacking a microwave oven, and turning it into a 2.45GHz transceiver.
Although, now he took it off because he thought that it was to dangerous.
What I am wanting to know is that if any body else might know how to hack
one, or if you might have his old plans.

I was able to find a fairly new microwave, and after I had got it he
did not have the plans any more. (or at least he would not give them out to
any body) I was originally going to see if I could make the transceiver and
try to hook it up to a Basic Stamp 2SX. Does any body now what I could do
with a microwave and a BSX? I know all of this sounds stupid, but I still
may get a project out of it yet!! If any body has any info at all, I would
appreciate it if you could send it my way. Like always, thanks in
advance.-Alex Burke

Hi Alex,

I think Bob took it off for a valid reason.
One shouldn't mess with microwave ovens unless the modifications
have nothing to do with the microwave sections (i.e. light, keypad, etc.)
Messing with microwaves in general can be very dangerous for
several reasons, and if you are not a specially trained microwave
technician, you may just want to let this one go by. I know this can be
hard:)

Just my opinion, have a nice evening,
Paul

I think I've seen such a project in one of the radio magazines
a few years back.

A microwave oven emits hundreds of watts of power at a frequency
that is designed to be most efficient (in terms of heating) to water.
Human beings are mostly water. This makes for a dangerous
project.

Transmitting data by microwave frequencies however, is very
interesting and quite safe -just don't use the internals of a
microwave oven.

Amateur Radio operators do alot of work with 10 GHz and the
gunplexers (microwave generating devices) are low power and
available on the surplus market (the older style industrial door
openeners at the supermarket, and really old alarm system motion
sensors are the most common sources).

Look in the ARRL's Handbook or one of the numerous microwave
books for details on this.

As far a Stamps go, data transmission at 10 GHz is certainly
interesting, but the main reason for doin this is for high-bandwidth,
full duplex transmissions -something no required (or possible,
really) with a Stamp.
