Thanks for the dial indicator suggestion. I have seen these units, and they
are quite precise for the $, usually made in China or Taiwan.
Right now am trying an IR LED shining through a pinhole with the IR receiver
diode running an LM311 comparator. If it doesn't work out, we will think
about your suggestion.
