When I was 10 my father gave me a model airplane for my birthday. Had to build it up from the balsa wood kit of parts. Powered by a 1cc diesel motor.
Some of the best fun I ever had was building that plane and flying it. It was quite a challenge.
I don't know what kids do now a days. Everything is ready made. Nothing to think about.
Anyway, I don't know where you are but stores are full of quad copters now a days. Of all sizes and prices.

With Elev-8 your son would get to learn a great deal more about how drones work, making him a better educated pilot.
Plus he'll have a great drone for flight and expansion.
