Parallax Font Origins

Did Parallax design the Parallax font from scratch, or was it based off of an existing font? I recently showed it to someone who said "that font looks familiar!" which took me by complete surprise because I know this person has never used a Parallax product.

    The Parallax font bears some semblance to Proggy Clean, a go-to font for many programmers, but I doubt it's a derivative.
