I just acquired a batch of CTS 256-AL2 chips. Have had a stash of legit (non-China) SPO256 chips & 3.12 crystals forever. In a week or so I can put together 8 kits of all three parts, I'm swagging ~$25 shipped for the set if anyone is interested. http://www.tradeofic.com/Circuit/6571-COMPUTER_SPEECH_SYNTHESIZER.html

Download a small PC program to hear sample output from Ken Lemieux: http://www.speechchips.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=13

FYI, this are 1980's vintage speech synthesis parts from General Instruments. The SPO is the synthesizer, the CTS is the text to speech chip. Neither the latest or greatest, but one of the first. Arguably must-have components and a rite of passage for builders. JonnyMac needed the 3.12 crystal a while back and I was able to hook him up. If you want a robot voice for your robot, look no further!

There's def some building involved, prolly a good weekend+ project. http://www.futurebots.com/spo256.pdf

Again, no rush (I'm buried), just an FYI advising availability. PM me if interested. I may be sitting on these parts for a few years...

Edit #2 : Same parts as this offering, but bare chips, no packaging. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Voice-Synthesizer-SPO256-AL2-IC-Text-to-Speech-CTS256-AL2-and-Oscilator-Crystal-/272541039639

  • I'm in for two sets as I need to test my parts that were under water in the Nashville flood. I'll PM in a couple of days.

I'll hand deliver them to NYC, Brother Jim! Assuming the CTS chips arrive before I leave Friday.
  • The SP0256 (number zero, not letter oh; that was a Radio Shack misprint) harkens back to the old S.A.M. and MacInTalk voice synthesizers, and lend a decided "8-bit" flavor to your robot. Just be aware that unless you hand-code some allophones once in a while to help the TTS algorithm, no one but you will understand what your robot is saying.

Spot on, Boss. This be a far cry from an Emic-2!
