With good help from the Forum I have now finished and tested a driver object and demo for the very powerful stepper motor driver chip powerStep01 from ST.
This chip has all the bells and whistles for controlling a stepper motor - up to 10A - including stall detection. Communication is by means of SPI.
I have used the board X-NUCLEO-IHM03A1 for development and test, but the chip looks extremely simple to put in a circuit - very little supporting circuitry is needed.
