There was actually more to it than that. If you look, they also added tags to further separate out things. This includes Multirotor, which Parallax looks upon (as you can see in their shopping cart pages) as a robotic platform. 
Maybe they'll keep with just the tags, or they will do further separation using these tags. In either case, this is a step in the right direction.

We added a number of tags today that correspond with the forums from the old site that were folded into broader categories on this site. You can click on a tag and see all of the messages that were in the related forum.

Sorting rice is much more difficult than tagging the discussions.

We were able to identify unique relationships between the discussions in the this site with the forums in the old site. Those details allowed us to essentially reconstruct the discussions from the merged categories. Writing the SQL for this was great fun.
