Transmit and receive audio less than 3 feet

Hi,
I have an application that requires speaking into a microphone and transmitting the voice audio clearly less than 3 feet into a receiver unit whereby the signal can then be amplified and output to a speaker. What technology would provide for the smallest transmitter and receiver. If cheap pre-built (eBay type equipment) modules exist for the transmitter and receiver, this would be preferable.
