Hm, that video refuses to play on my Linux notebook. I wiish there was an accompanying article to explain what it's about.

It's supposed to be some sort of portable high res HUD. I am very skeptical it will be able to do what the video suggests anytime soon.

Adult industry will benefit a lot...

I already see the headlines "Famous porn model, Fluffy Poofy sues X3D for using her visual image without licensing" :D

    Duane Degn,

It is supposed to come out with Windows 10, and they already have a working prototype. I read an article from someone who tested the prototype and although the device is currently a little bigger than the final, it works pretty much like in the above video.

Regardless, we will see pretty soon whether it compares to the device in the video........

    Duane,

Thanks for posting the video link. Well, I'm extremely sceptical. It looks great when the guy just pops the finger and some gadget materializes (well, a hologram of it). But it won't be like that for real, that's just like playing something pre-recorded - you can't just think about something and then have it coming into view by flicking a finger. That video tried to give the impression that all of this could be done interactively, I say you can't get anything out of nothing - you have to create it in advance first. And when it comes to imagining things, I do that better in my head than with visual methods - so those of us who don't gain from GUI tools have nothing to gain from a 3D variant, and in any case - where's the mechanism which creates the vision? Conveniently left out of the video (well I didn't see it to the end - it all seemed to be more of the same).

Interesting... seems most useful in modeling.

Perhaps another disruptive technology. This one my put Legos out of business. Why bother with buying more bricks?

Well, on the plus side those holographic models will take up a lot less space than material ones do.

Wouldn't this be augmented reality? You can play with that right now on your PC using a web cam.

The way this looks seems like it would rely on SLAM or something a little more than just object recognition. Using the standard que cards you wouldn't get these results consistently.

I get the feeling there is a camera in front and it's not using hologram or hud, but renders both the actual background and icons on the screen in front of your eyes.
In the beginning your probably feel sea sick due to minute lag.

Here's some more info on the HoloLens.

I suspect it will be priced out of range for most of us for a while. But like other technologies it should come down in price in a few years.

It is an interesting device for sure. I don't think they should call it a "Holo"lens since there are no holograms involved, but "AugmentedRealityLens" doesn't exactly roll of the tongue. I also think that the resolution will be underwhelming. While the little projectors in the headset may be HD the projected image of that 50" TV will take up only a small portion of the available pixels - the projectors will have to cover a pretty wide area, much wider than a typical monitor. Even if they were 4k projectors that 50" TV will still be lo-res until it fills half the field of view.

Never the less, it will be a good start. My main concern is the same as Tony's, minute lag. It would surprise the heck out of me if there were not detectable jitter as the images try to keep their intended positions.

I don't know; If the HoloLens really is geared towards gamers and "in-house" users, then its cost might be close to an expensive IPhone.

Yes, the resolution could be very poor. Hopefully, Microsoft will be able to put better and better projectors into it in time making pictures much crisper.

This all assumes that the HoloLens actually lasts that long though...
