I've been looking for awhile and was just wondering if anyone has been able to use an LM339 w/ transistors to build a "smoke-proof" motor driver. Looking at the pinout and reading up on it, I would assume that since it has 4 outputs it looks like it would be possible to drive 1 dc motor with reverse, right? Similar to an op-amp? (Sorry if i am way wrong, trying to teach myself)

It is possible, but the LM339 is a poor choice for that purpose. It is a voltage comparator designed for lower speed applications.

Mike I use the L298 chip which is a dual full bridge driver. Not once have I smoked one out but you need to attach a good heat sink to it. Attached is the data sheet for it. Hope this help you out.
