Long range communication

I need to find a transmitter and receiver to transmit data from a basic stamp 2 microcontroller to a receiver on the ground that can then interface with a laptop. I need more range than the parallax transmitter and receiver offer. 1+ miles would be ideal. If anyone knows what part I ought to use taht would be greatly appreciated.

Also if anyone can recommend a low-cost altimeter to take readings approx every 5 seconds (or more often), transmit them to the microcontroller to be transmitter to the ground and my laptop to be processed.

The XBee Pro claims a range of one mile. In lieu of an altimeter, you could use Parallax's GPS module.

I used XBee pro and It works pretty good with BS2. I transmitted Compass, 2-axis accelerometer and GPS data.
I guess using GPS (with 1 Hz update rate), u can get the altitude info every second.
