Encoder in schematic of MMBe

What is the "ENCODER" referred to on page 9 of the MMBe datasheet on the Parallax web site? Can you describe what sort of device this might be? A simple hole counter? Hall Effect device? Something more complicated?
The maximum number of counts in my present application is 82 counts per minute, which represents 654 rpm. (Eight magnets mounted on a 3" diameter circle using a Melexis 90217 Hall-Effect sensor.)
