Newbie requiring a little help

Good Day to all...

I have started reading about basic stamps about a week ago. I purchased Nuts
and Volts magazine, and thought their article to be very interesting. So I went
to my local electronics store, and purchased a book. I finished that one, and
researched a little on the net.

Since I'm the type or person who learns better getting my hands a little dirty,
I figured I would give this a try. Now because I don't know anything about it,
and the odds of my first unit going up in smoke (litterally) are pretty good, I
really want to spend a little money as possible on my unit. I found the OEM
version or the Stamp II (part #27291 at Parallax). Is this the same as the real
thing? Is it going to do the same things, program the same, etc...? Why is it
that much cheaper?

Now for my first project. I am trying to replicate the left click of a mouse,
on 2 different PC's simultaneously. Basically, I need to slave 2 power point
presentation together. The whole thing would work with an AMX control system.
I found a project similar to that one on the LOSA wesite, but the link to the
project details isn't good anymore. Has anyone ever done this? Will the unit I
am looking at purchasing achieve this?

OK. I think that is enough writing for one post. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Martin

The OEM Stamp is -- from a software and performance point-of-view -- exactly
like the "real thing." The difference in price corresponds to the difference
in price for the components (through-hole versus surface-mount) and the lower
    cost of manufacturing.

You can download quite a number of helpful books from Parallax and our Stamps
In Class web sites. That will help you avoid the "up in smoke" issue you're
    concerned about.
