proximity sensing leds with arduino

I have seen this in table designs, etc and now for sale as Octolively kits.However, does anyone know of an example with code for one block controlling maybe 4-6 leds and one set of photo cells? I mean an example of one block shouldn't be that hard to come up with for arduino, I just cant find anything active on the net anywhere.
