MAC Address Question

I'm missing something here I know, so please bear with me. In order for the spinneret to talk over ethernet, you have to set the MAC address to what's on the bottom of the card. If you don't or typo it, it just doesn't talk. So it seems that somewhere in there the spinneret already knows it's MAC address and it's just checking to see if you are smart enough to type it in correctly??? If that's right, how can we get the spinneret to just give us it's mac address instead of having to read it off of the SD card, or worse yet, hard code it into the program???

What am I missing here???

No, you can set it to anything you want, so long as it doesn't match that of another node within the same network. The only advantage of using the one on the sticker is that it's guaranteed to be globally unique.
