Read/Write serial data in VB2008

Hello, my Stamp 2 Board of Education is now the heart of my developed "Observatory Control System". This is a nifty device helps me monitor and control everything from my telescope position, to the roof of my robotic Internet controlled observatory. I've got the Stamp part working great! But I run into problems on the PC side:
Basically what I need is some way to read serial data into my PC through the serial port (I have a serial BoE) and then actual DO something with it, i.e. read in data as variables. This seems like a very simple thing to do, but here I am, weeks later, weeks into my "Learn VB2008 in 24 hours" and I'm no closer to figuring this out.
I've used the search function but I can't seem to find anyone with any working code that would even show me how to do this in VB2008. . .any suggestions or pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks!
