I made a copper ring and attached IR Leds and IR detectors to its periphery.

Here is one of the IR clusters
The Right hand clear LED fires Infrared light directly to the floor.
The dark Led is the IR detector and this picks up the reflected light.
So normally it is always fired......until it tries to go over a cliff ,whereby the detector detects
and lights up the white LED about the detector (for debug and Arty look)
, of course the relative avoid falling of the cliff routine kick in to save the day .....YAY

As well as "Cliff Detect" it also has two forward corner pointing sensors to avoid the "Chink" with the Sake Glasses.

Awesome work Gareth! Kimono is amazing and quite stylish. I'm jealous of the incredible robots you're churning out in record time. Maybe you have more free time than me and my 3-y.o twins! Keep up the excellent work, that circular IR sensor array on bot's base is brill...

No glasses, but I have an unopened bottle of fine sake here for you, next time you're in LA.

It's good that you start with a clear purpose and something that is truly needed. I hate when saki glasses sit on the table without being challenged!!

I love the edge detection - there were a couple times when I thought we were going to be seeing some accidents at the edge of the table.

    Once again, very inspiring work!

I am gratful to have flexible working hours and a son who already builds robots ...... although burning the midnight oil also helps.

Its surprisingly stable, although as you see in the video there are a few edge combinations unaccounted for ...........
...... biggest challenge for me was to let her free roam and trust her routines,..... you might have noticed the safety handle .... a necessity during early stages of programming...

My original plan was to use a single 3W IR LED mounted right on top (and cast a halo of IR around the bot).... but the "angle of the dangle" mechanics did not work out.....i have not given this idea up yet..

+1... The ONLY way I can get anything done anymore is in the wee hours of the morning while everyone's asleep. I'm whispering in most of my Youtube videos for fear of waking anyone up!
