Can DC motors be safely started without ramping up?

Hi,

Can I start my DW motors at full speed? Or is it necessary to ramp up slowly?

Any help or advice are much appreciated.

DC motors? (DW?) Depends on the application. Small motors with low momentum and low current demands can often be switched on without ramping, if the application is OK with it. Large motors have large starting momentum and large current demands, and a soft start with ramping has many advantages, lower startup power and mechanical shock included.

Very large motors (eg, elevator motors) are required by law to minimize current spikes, and so must be ramped...
