Robin WITH pole !
OMG, test poll had slipped to page 2... can't have that!
By changing one letter at a time in each word without permuting letters, leaving two other common English words, how many changes are required to get from
TEST POLLI got it in five substitutions for each word. Can anyone do it in fewer? Three is the theoretical minimum for TEST->MATT; four for POLL->MATT. All words have to be in The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (Fourth Edition).

PhiPi wins for the most complicated perturbation yet.
Can I say "perturbation" on TV?
Fibonacci sequence, anyone?
Survey says...
Phil is way smarter that me.
LOL... Exactly!
Apparently, Phil is explanation-challenged. :) So here's an example, going from COG to HUB:
COG(I was gonna use STAMP to PROPS for the example but couldn't find a route.)
HOG
HUG
HUB
-Phil
POLL
MOLL
MALL
MALT
MATT
Best I could come up with for POLL->MATT
(assuming moll is in Scrabble dictionary, don't have mine handy)
The other appears harder.
Rick,
Yup, MOLL is in there. You beat me by one and hit the theoretical minimum! I had:
POLL-Phil
POLE
PALE
MALE
MALT
MATT
Wow! I don't think I've ever hit a theoretical minimum before....makes me want to wake up the wife and kid and share the moment!
Can PHIL become RICK in just 4 moves? A prickly problem, to be sure.
