I'm making a printed circuit board that I wish to power with one of those simple 9 volt power supplies you can get at Radio Slack, one that has the same kind of connector that plugs into the Propeller Demo board. Problem is, I don't know what they're called. What I'm looking for is the same type as what is on the Propeller Demo board. To my eyes, it looks like it would be a female connector, but I know connector terminology can get a little weird sometimes, so I'm not even sure it would be classified as a female. If possible, I'd rather it be a part from Digikey, so if you happen to know a part number that you are certain will work, please let me know. If nothing else, I just need to know what to search for.

thanks,
Mark

DC power socket is the usual name. I use these:

They are made by Switchcraft and should be available from Digi-Key or Mouser.

Mark,

This one is pretty close to the one one the demo board.

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?lang=en&site=US&WT.z_homepage_link=hp_go_button&KeyWords=CP-202A-ND

It has a slot to fit in an enclosure.  Make sure to look at the data sheet.  That third solder tab (on the side) is part of a switch so batteries can be disconnected when the power is connected.

Thanks Duane and Leon,

I'm glad I asked. I was looking for a female type plug and, ummmm, now I see it's considered a male. Hmmmm.... shocked

much appreciated!

Those plugs and sockets are more like hermaphrodites. :-)

Thanks Cluso. :-)

The switching feature on this one and the one that Duane suggested is a feature I had never thought to look for. I'm happy y'all came to my rescue.

The -A is 2.1mm which is common in the US. In Australia the -B is 2.5mm and is more common. (center pin dia)

The CP-202A-ND is a bigger pin and is more common but usually requires slots. Make sure you wire the correct ground pins as one is switched. Since I dont use the switch I just wire both to ground.

I tried to get a connector so I took my demoboard to Radio Shack.  It is a type N connector.  We went through about 25 plugs to see which one would fit.

It's should actually be an "M" adapter (5.5mmOD x 2.1mm ID). The "N" has a 2.5mm ID. I have used an "N" in the past with mixed results.

Hover1 is right. I use Radio Shack's variable voltage 300mA wallwart which comes with all the common sized adapters and I use the "M" for the Protoboard, Spin Studio and PSM with no prolems.

The one on their (Rat Shack) multi voltage power supply is perfect. I've got a couple of them,
however the 2.1 equiv. plug in the parts bin fits, but is twice the required length.
Works, but looks funny.
