Ok, It's Unofficial Contest time again...

Create a Halloween display which uses the Propeller (actively) by Midnight October 31st, 2009.
Projects must be posted to this thread by the deadline.
Bonus points awarded for videos of your project.

Myself and my boys will act as judges this year.

Yes, that's right my favorite time of the year is upon up again!
This year I wanted to do something different and this time I wanted to use the Propeller.
I am new to the Propeller and new to spin.
I came up with this idea for my Halloween costume this year, of the (MPIC), Mobile Propeller Interface Computer.
A costume of a computer nerd wearing a portable computer with keyboard and display small enough to attach on his arm with Velcro. I wanted it to display the number of pi constantly scrolling to say 500 or a 1000 places with some sort of graphics. The hardware is available for that, however I am pressed for time and don't think I will have the program completed by then.
So, here we go !
"I am willing to give it my best shot". I am a hardware guy.
Learning spin as fast as I can.

No limits! The project must use a Propeller chip actively!
(In otherwords it can't be a simple costume decoration.)

Hmmm... I've got a bzillion projects I'm in the middle of and school stuff as well...

I'll give it a shot anyways. Who knows? I may win and be able to sell that dip chip for a nice amount. :-)

Quit buying all those fixed voltage regulators, and get an Adjustable Power Supply for your projects!  Includes an LED testing terminal!

This doesn't qualify for this Propeller Halloween contest, but last year a friend and I built a Basic Stamp II based electroluminescent wire costume for his son. It was great fun to work on and a big hit when trick-or-treating in the dark.

Project Gone wrong !
The Geek Wearable Portable Computer.

Everybody has had a project gone wrong and I don't think I am the first !
My Halloween project that I have been working on sure did go wrong in the most important way.
After creating cables, battery connections, plugs and hacking some display programs for my big day-bue at the yearly Halloween party, my display cut's out after about 1 1/2 hours ?
You know, the worst nightmare you can have. After all that work and time you put into the project.
Well after some tinkering with power connection, no that is not the problem, then the display, no that is not the problem.
I turns out to be the video cable I bought at radio shack ! Bad luck I guess.
The only component I did not make !
It seems that all the walking around and the cable being a little stiff created a break in the cable about 1" behind the connector attached to the video out plug.
What bad luck, but there is a bright side.
I learned something about field testing that I have forgotten , Test Everything ! Even under stressful conditions.
I did not test the project by wearing it around or 3 to 4 hours with all the bending and walking around to view it's performance.
Good thing for test runs, and this is what it was.
I repaired the cable, cut off the end to make it shorter and soldered it on. Tested it on the bench.
Tonight or Thursday I will strap it on and take it for a spin. confused

Yes,
Display's sprites on the screen, mouse control's one sprite around the screen. 1 large LED at p0 blinking like a heartbeat.
At the time the pic's were taken all attempts to revive the screen were futile without a spare video cable.

Here is my pumpkin, pretty simple. Its been done before, but this is my take on it.

Code was done in 12blocks. I added a PIR sensor. Except it is a foam pumpkin, and the "princess bride" carving was done in about six seconds on my CNC machine.

LED to pins 2,3,4 Flickers. PIR sensor to pin 5. I have the PIR hooked in the back. So you have to wave your hand in front of the pumpkin for it to see motion. When you do, the pumpkin flickers very quickly, as if responding to wind.

I hope others can make use of this for Halloween.

I included both the 12blocks code and the spin code for folks not using 12blocks. Have fun.

Ok, not many entries yet, but still a few days to go.

A friend asked me for some help with this project. She wanted a Cylon themed Pumpkin. She pointed me toward a website with schematics using a 555 timer, a shift register and few diodes to form OR gates, and said "Can you build this for me?" I decided to throw a $8 Propeller at it and make my life much easier.

It's certainly overkill to use a 160 mhz, 8 core processor to blink 8 leds, but every project I do gets a Propeller nowadays.

couple of quick notes -


  • The sound in the video is not from the Propeller
  • one of the LEDs looks brighter than the others. In person you don't see that, just a matter of camera angle or some other effect going on there

Neoteric-
Great use of 12blocks! This is exactly the type of project ideal for 12blocks- use of a sensor or two to cause something to happen. I'm sure the blocks made it a "snap" to put together. I'm almost done adding support for multiple state machines and a "spin" block- that'll let you easily tackle much more complex projects as well.

OK, I have a project I put together tonight and it worked, but I can not post pictures or video now. I used a Prop Demo Board with the microphone to headphones demo loaded, a video camera, a portable DVD player, and a large (and loud) Boston Acustics sound system. (I think you can see where this is going ) I made a large, loud, kid scareing machine!! I hooked the portable DVD player (to use as a display device) to the video camera by setting the video camera outside on the front porch and running the cables trough a nearby window. I also hooked up a full sound system and took the input cable through a window and hooked it to the demo board sound port. Then I loaded in the propeller program, powered everything up, pushed "REC" on the camera and it worked! Of all the kids that came only 1 was truly afriad of it. The others where simply startled or curious where the sound was coming from. 1 came and found the camera and nearly kicked it! (He would have gotten kicked next) Tomorrow I will post a video of the kids getting scared. Cheers!
