I know its been done. I have an LM1881 sync separator chip. I want to overlay the TV video I am generating now on top of some camera video. How do you sync the two? How to 'paint' the prop generated video ? This is for my autopilot project

Bean (Hitt Consulting) has had a Propeller video overlay module. The schematic and software were open source. He seems to have closed up shop, but here's the stuff from his website that I downloaded some time ago. I believe he was using an improved version of the LM1881.

File Attachment :
HITT_HC-OSD_012.zip   424KB (application/zip)
This file has been downloaded 110 time(s).

File Attachment :
HC-OSD Schematic.pdf   53KB (application/pdf)
This file has been downloaded 145 time(s).

I don't know that he's actually closed up shop. Although the website seems to be down right now, a whois query reveals that he renewed the domain name just last month.

SparkFun has a couple in stock as well as a couple of his Prop Dongle boards and a couple of his SX-based video overlay devices.

His website did say that he's no longer selling products through his website as of April 1st according to a snapshot by Google.

I got it working using an LM1881 and his HITT_Video_overlay_012 code. Works ok, but still has some problems. Gotta run right now, but I will be back tonight.

@ Old Man Earl   I believe Bean switched over to: The EL1883 because it works at 3.3V. The LM1881 requires 5 volts.

EL1883 still seems to be a current product from Intersil. LM1881 still works, but for future projects I'll opt for the EL1883.

Jim

I think I have figured out how to use it ! See picture above. Now to put in lines, circles bars etc...Maybe an artificial horizon ? How about an arrow pointing to point of launch...
Any other ideas ?
BTW, this takes up about the same room as tv.text that I don't need now AND it only takes up 2 PINS.

Another pic here
You can see even in a bright area of the screen the data comes thru...

Earl, is the image on the screenshot an actual photograph overlay, or is that a glare image of your surroundings?

The data is overlayed on a very bad camera. There is glare on the camera lens. The screen is a 22" monitor
The LM1881 chips composite output pin 1 goes to pin 0 of the prop. pin 1 of the prop go to a video out connector. The camera input connector has a 47 ohm resister to the output jack and a connection to pin 2 of the LM1881. Sounds complicated, but this is simpler than using tv.text object !
here is another shot while I look for a better camera !

Earl, no problem, we like crudeness around here:)

I think this is brilliant. Just what I need to put alerts and alarms up on the TV when everyone is glued to it.

Anyone know how it would be possible to do this using SCART on PAL TV. It would have to sit between my telly and the digibox.

For me, the past is not over yet.

heater, it depends on wether your digibox is sending composite over the scart, or RGB
either way it'd be possible, you'd just have to approach it in a different way if it's RGB but still possible :D

In less than 24 hrs, with pictures, code and a schematic!

Definitely something that I want to duplicate.

Here is another screen shot. The camera is pointed out the back window and the overlay data is brighter now. Pardon the glare in the upper left. The monitor is next to the window.

Earl: "Ya work harder and longer when your retired..."

I'm looking forward to it. My father bought his first computer and started to learn to program it when he retired in the early 1980s.

Trouble is it doesn't look like I'll have the ranch or the horse by then:(.
