Hi

I've been looking at some stepper motor controller circuit websites and from what I can see, making a controller seems to be quite straight forward. Has anyone here ever attempted that with a sucessful outcome?

Direct control of a uni-polar stepper is not difficult -- whether you do it directly or through a controller is a matter of what functionality you require. We sell a stepper motor for experimenters and the documentation shows how to control it from a BASIC Stamp using a ULN2003 (Darlington array) to drive the coils.

Bi-polar motors require the ability to change polarity -- you could do this with a chip like the L293D.

Does uni-polar or bi-polar have anything to do with the motor being able to run in reverse?

No, uni-polar and bi-polar motors can be commanded to move in either direction.
