I considered fitting a sonar to my cayak, but it petered out into nothing...

I know that commercial sonar/fishfinders can have the transducer mounted on the inside of fibreglass hulls IF you make absolutely certain that there are no air bubbles trapped in the epoxy.
Of course, those are much more powerful than the ultrasonic kit awailable on the Parallax website.

There may also be an issue about which frequencies to use.

Maybe something like this can be adapted?
    http://www.fishfinder-store.com/hufifimowism.html

It's a waterproof module with a sonar transducer and a wireless connection to a watch-type screen. It's even on sale at the moment.
(I'm broke at the moment, othervise...)
