USB to serial

Hi,

I just purchased the usb to serial adapter from parallax and I am having trouble installaing it on my laptop.· I believe it's a windows xp issue.

After detecting the new hardware and at the end of the installation process I get a message "unable to install, cannot find file".· I have no clue what file this is referring to.· Are there any ideas out there?

Thanks,

Chris Isaacson

Did you download the drivers from the website?

Yes I got the drivers from the website linked from Parallax.

As a matter of fact, this is the second time I have tried to install a usb to serial adapter.· The first one was a Belden (more expensive) and I had the same problem so I took it back.· That's why I'm thinking it's an XP issue.

    Thanks,

One thing that can cause an issue on USB devices is 2 different speed devices connected to the same hub.· A hub is any group of USB ports that reside together, usually one stacked on top of another.· That's why I'm glad my motherboard has 8 USB 2.0 ports, because I have 7 USB devices, 4 of which are USB 2.0, and don't get along when connected with a low-speed device.

Another USB problem can be excessive draw from the USB port...I am experiencing this with my Dell Laptop which has an MS Optical Mouse, FTDI USB to Serial Adapter & Parallax USB O-Scope...Drawing too much from the ports!

    Thanks Chris,

There's a similar thread on the Stamp Forum.· One thing I haven't done is connect to the internet during installation.· I'll try that next when my laptop comes back in from the field.

OK.· Same problem.· Different day.· This time connected to the internet.

When I plug the device into the USB port, I get a window that says:
    ·"Cannot Install this Hardware
There was a problem installing this hardware:
    ······· USB Serial Converter
An error occurred during the installation of this device
The system cannot find the file specified

Click Finish to close the wizard"

When I click finish, the window closes and then pops up again.· I tried uninstalling the driver and restarting the computer but nothing changes.

    Any ideas?

BTW I would have attached the window as it appears on my screen but I appear to not be able to use the Attachment Manager.· Am I doing something wrong?
